Maggie

Hello,

I am looking for a small PIC that is not only readily available (difficult I know) but is supported by Positron and as cheap as possible.
Seems like the PIC16F15256 and the PIC16F15243 would meet my needs and also the PIC16F15224 for another project, but as yet is not supported by Positron.

Does anyone know if these devices will be supported in the near future?

My main requirements are:

2x 10 BIT ADC
12x GPIO

For another project 1x EUART for RS485 & 8x GPIO

Thanks

They will be on the list for the next upgrade of the compilers, along with some other newer devices.

Thank you, Les, for the continuous support!

Would it be possible to list all newly supported devices when you announce the update? Makes planning easier when we know what new "toys" are available.

It's not that easy. Microchip have made so many changes for very little reason, I am having to re-write large portions of the assembler source section in the 8-bit compiler for them. Microchip have also changed the info they provide for new device specs and SFRs etc, so my auto generators do not work at all now on the newer devices, so I am having to create all the files by hand and eye.

They have also changed the assembler required for them, so the assembly code needs to be different. Why??, when the info and assembler have worked perfectly for the past 20 years and the changes to the devices themselves are not that big! Change for the sake of change, unfortunately. They must have had a new set of university nerds in, or the new management are like Steve Ballmer, who always thought he knew better than everyone else and screwed up Micro$oft "big time". You just have to look at the shambles that is MPLABX for what Microchip now consider as good! Slow, bulky, and pitted with flaws that actually makes using it a tedious operation, and it often crashes for no reason whatsoever when creating code. Just as you would expect from a Linux app written in Java. :-)

You just have to visit their website to see how bad they have become. It is absolutely dreadful, and that is putting it mildly. LOL

So I have to go through the list and choose the devices that are more suitable, until I get the new compiler source and info generators fully up to scratch. However, I will give a list a few weeks before the "upgrade" happens.

Many thanks Gamboa. The list of devices is increasing whenever I get the chance to work on the files and the code changes required etc...

Hi,

Thanks for you replies and for for the continued development and support.
I look forward to using some of the newer devices in the future.

Cheers.

Hi Les, Gamboa and everyone else,

As a developer does proton have a list of all supported PICs that have a UART with protocol support for Manchester / DALI.
I know the PIC18F24K42 has a UART of this type but really I am looking for smaller device, maybe 14 to 20 pins. Or if its larger, its needs to be as cheap.

And as parts are difficult to get at the moment, I need to match a part that has this and is supported by Positron and hopefully is in stock somewhere.

I am just looking for a list that I can then go through really, but just cannot find one anywwhere.

Oh, I have totally given up on the Microchip website, in the past it was easy to use and search for specific parts and fast. Not anymore. Think they have totally ruined it!

Thanks

I also found this: https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/AppNotes/01465A.pdf

Microchip seem to have forgotten the adage 'if it 'ain't broke, don't fix it'.

Of the devices in that thread, the smallest+cheapest is the 14-pin 18F04Q40, but that one's not supported by PDS.

The next cheapest supported one would be the 28-pin 18F25Q43

Maggie

Hi John,

Thanks for the quick reply.
That is helpful. The App note looks really good, thanks.

The PIC18F14Q40 device would be perfect and its in stock and cheap, but as yet not supported by Positron.
I am not sure what the Q variants are over the other. I need to look that up but the Q parts seem really cool devices.

I have PIC18F24K42 which I can use to prototype with and maybe change to a PIC18F14Q40 in the future perhaps if and when it gets into Positron land.

Thanks for your time.

Maggie

Hi Tumbleweed,

Ah yes the 18F04Q40 looks a perfect match along withe the 18F14Q40, both low cost.
I didn't know the 18F04Q40 existed. Interesting find. One of these for the future maybe.

Thanks

The Q series is the newest in the 18F line, and typically with microchip newer = cheaper.

It looks to be a different process... instead of F and LF versions there's one single version that covers 1.8V to 5.5V operation.

They also tend to include a boatload of different peripheral functions, including most of the CIP peripherals. Some of the family has more RAM than previously available on the 18F, and support features like vectored interrupts.

Thanks. Very interesting. Maybe the Q parts will be good for new projects once PDS supports them.

The newer 18F06Q and 18F16Q devices are the ones I am now working on. However, Microchip have really, really screwed up third parties with these devices!. The data on them is scarce and the data files that once existed do not for them, which makes the compiler's files really time consuming to create. They have also stopped supporting them in the Mpasm assembler for some , extremely stupid, reason, so I am now having to use the open source GCC assembler, but that makes things a lot different in the assembler listing and I am having to re-write large sections of the compiler. It is getting more and more like Microchip will stop releasing any data for the devices, and a user "must" use one of their dreadful compilers or IDE, but that is capitalism for you. Absolute control of "crap", but nothing can be done because they control it all! I'm just waiting for Microchip to buy up "ARM" as well someday, then they will be in "absolute" control.... It will happen.

There is also a waiting list of approx 1 year for the newer devices!

As John said... "if it 'ain't broke, don't fix it"! And worse still... Fix something for no reason, but actually make things worse???

Maggie

Thanks for the update.
The 06Q and 16Q are in stock at most places like Digikey, Mouser, etc at fairly good prices. I look forward to these being supported, although from what you have said that won't be anytime soon.
It must be very difficult and frustrating knowing this is the way Microchip are going. Its a shame really. As always, this happens, they just get too big and shut off all the people around them that helped make them successful.
If I was forced to use Microchips tools, I think I would prefer to move over to another device vendor totally as I would have to learn it all from the beginning so would simply take my pick to which devices / vendor route to go down.
More than likely would be ARM based or something quirky. I do like TI's MSP430 devices as well, I used them for a few projects as an experiment more than anything else really, but they are supper cheap, 20p for some of the 14 pin devices. At least with ARM most vendors produce them under licence. Even RPI have bow released the RP2040 chip on its own and at around 70 pence, I think it may end up being successful for RPI as it has a lot of infrastructure and support around it for beginners and hobbyists.

Anyway, I will continue with PICs/Positron for sometime yet, can't see that changing anytime soon, not after all these fantastic years of proton coding.....

Thanks and have a good weekend.

Has anyone looked at the webpage they laughingly call a "Parametric Search"? About as much use as a chocolate radiator. I was looking for a device that could run at 64MHz, had at least 5 ADC channels, PWM, a EUSART, SPI, CAN and a few other bits. 3 hours later and significantly raised blood pressure and anger levels at a tool that is USELESS.

They USED to have a very good parametric search, but whoever wrote the new one needs taking to give whatever they were paid back to Microchip.  >:(  >:(  >:(

Well, perhaps is better to download the catalog spreadsheet.

Did you mean the MAPS page?

There's only one device conforming your requirements, took 2 minutes with MAPS: PIC18F66K80
