There is also a more up to date version of the pickit GUI program called "pickit-"
It's similar to pickitplus, but it's free.

http://kair.us/projects/pickitminus/index.html

Works with PK2 and PK3, and includes a commandline driver.

Nice find

Quote from: midali on Jan 13, 2022, 10:56 AMI had similar problems on laptop , so I use a cable with double USB inputs , working with no errors.
Also, regarding the whole "double USB" thing, what I've found is that if you set the voltage a little lower (by about 0.2V or so), that can help, esp w/a USB port that may not be providing quite enough voltage.

It shouldn't need the current from 2 USB ports since the PK is only spec'd to provide about 35mA to the target if I remember correctly.

Just installed PICKitplus and I have to say that's a relieve because it programs so much quicker then Mlabx, you have to set the PICkit3 to bootloader instead of Mlab mode. I copied the parameters from a post from Rick, but now I'm looking for parameters that permit an external powersource. Tomorrow I wil do some reading on the subject.

I agree with Tumbleweed. If a PIC is reluctant to program dropping the voltage to 4.75V usually does the trick with the PICkit3.

Hello
I have had to go as low as 3.5 Volts using China knock off's PICKIT3.

These knock off's seem to have different resistor values at the voltage sensing circuit, I have had problems with it myself. Got the original one and two clones. In Mlab ide the clones do not detect the device because of the VVP being to low. I read that someone aplied an external voltage to it to work, and it was detected but the PICkit got damaged. In the Mlab stand alone version and Pickitplus it do manages to detect due to some different timing which allows to reach the proper voltage. Real strange.

BTW attempting to power your project from the PicKitx will cause hair loss, bed wetting and probably septicemia (the last one not proven, just my theory). I've use both knock off and pukka without the need for double cables of USB3 (more poer than USB2).

Another tip is to avoid the "device autodetect" function.

Originally, MCLR/VPP was rated for 12V-13V max. Over time this dropped to 9V, and with some devices like the 18FxxJ series it's limited to about 3.6V
