Hi,

I need two PIC18F14K22 PDIP. From EU, where can I buy with sensible shipping charges? Buying from Microchip, shipping for two EUR12.00, which is a bit expensive for only two PICS.

Used to buy from there, but with Brexit, minimum of EUR7.00 just for customs for the paper work, plus customs, plus VAT, and plus all the trouble when you have a paper missing.

So I try to avoid as much as I can UK.

And they have bumped up the minimum order for free shipping, even if you have  an account.

Very sad that, the last supplier offering free delivery on all orders, now gone.

In what country do you reside? Is there not an EU branch of RS?

I was in the EU last summer and if you heck postal rates in the EU (7EUR for a postcard to Canada  :o ), you will probably find that 12E shipping (which includes handling and postage) from MC is not that expensive.

My advise - plan ahead, spend a bit and order several different chips from MC to spread the shipping cost over several units.

Even better - if it is not that urgent, order those as samples, might take a bit longer but will be completely free of charge.

Gday Joe,
Although I understand your point with pack and post it's still cheap for their speedy delivery. It's made to look worse with the cost of the PIC itself so low. We've all experienced the same thing. Trastikata has the right advice.

I used to send CD boxes with a circuit board and some parts all around the world for about $7. I thought about the path it took from my town to the recipient 10,000km away, the number of times it was handled and then delivered to someone's house and I couldn't believe how cheap it was and our post office still makes a profit.

Freight from the UK and the US to Australia is horrendous though. It's a real dampener for buying from there and made worse with the exchange rate of course.
Best wishes
John

Hi everyone

Just as a point of comparison:  Within the U.S.  from Mouser,  2 of the 18F14K22 MCU's  (20 pin DIP) are $5.68 + $7.99 minimum shipping (Ground) gives $13.67 total.  = 12.99 euro.  Are there any branches of Digikey or Mouser that are located in the EU which could save on customs duties?

Seems like the suppliers have it all figured out...

Sounds like EU postal charges start at 6 or 7 euros?  They must really encourage email.

Gentlemen:

Perhaps I should have mentioned that no PIC18F14K22 devices are actually in stock.  Projected "in stock" is March 2023.

No shipping costs for Mouser above 50 euros.
414 pieces in stock from PIC18F14K22-E/SO.

(Edit: O, I see you need DIP housing...)

RS Components still have 6 in stock, see my link in post #1, but for Malta I assume there are no electronic component stockists on the island so carriage will always be an issue.  In my experience Digi-Key and Mouser handle all the paperwork for importing into the UK and I assume the EU. Delivery times are excellent from them.

I have a suggestion. Forcing is a solution.  ;D
Please look at the picture.

Hi
I live in Portugal and use a French supplier via ebay.es
His cost for 18F14K22 is 15 euros for 3 including postage.
He has quite an extensive range of PIC chips and I notice he has started to do Atmel as well.
I have bought a number of devices from him with no problems and quick turnaround.
I know he is on other european ebay sites.

Believe it or not, yesterday I purchased 3 from this seller on Ebay. EUR15.00 with free shipping.

For me, those shipping fees are all BS. Sellers are making extra profit from shipping. Just have a look at the stamps on envelopes and there sometimes the postage does not sums up.

RS Components have a representative here in Malta.

I used to order from them. They make a small profit margin and free shipping. Now a days, if you buy a resistor they charge minimum of EUR30. Free shipping is when you spend EUR75 and over. Very ridiculous!!

I used to buy from RS UK, send them to a courier, because RS UK does not post to Malta, and get items for EUR6.00, which was very reasonable.

With all due respect, I think that this is one thing that US begin the trade war with China. I cannot explain it to myself how shipping from china is so cheap compared to postage from EU to another EU country.

So yes, nothing will change my mind that greedy for money suppliers are making a lot, lot more profit from shipping.

No wonder I never made good money.

Rant over. Thanks everyone for the help.

Joe

AS I understand it, China bundles shipments together to save costs and uses its' own low cost (but not rapid) methods, such as rail to get them into Europe.

HAL

Hi

50 euros for shipping would stop me from ordering forever.
I notice that aliexpress has some in the sop package but no really good prices appear.

Here in the UK, I stopped buying anything from the USA many years ago. On one small unit, the extra handling charges and taxes actually cost more that the item did, so I refused to take it from the post man. Even gifts that arrive from the USA with "no cost" on the envelope are charged handling and taxes when they arrive at our door. They even add tax to the handling tax!!! I found that out the hard way, and had to pay £20 for a gift from Lee of some APA102 RGBW LEDs a few years ago.

Yet I receive items from China with no costs at all! So much for the "good relations" nonsense from politicians. :-)
