Zigbee?

Hi all!  :)
I'd like to tinker a bit with Zigbee. I have some ideas I would like to investigate further, but my programming skills are somewhat limited. I have done a number of PicBasic projects in the past, so I thought it might be a nice starting point.
My question is if there are any examples where PicBasic have been used to implement a Zigbee device?
I have found there are various Zigbee chips that are, or can act as, Zigbee enpoints; slaves devices controlled by a microcontroller (such as the TI CC2530), but there are also "native" PIC devices in the PIC32CX-BZ family. As of today, there doesn't seem to be any support for that specific family in PicBasic, although it have been mentioned in the past that it might come to be eventually.
So, if I was to plan for a Zigbee project, what would you suggest as a reasonable path forward?
