Has anybody used the SM size 8uMAX? It looks a bit small to me; I'm OK with SOIC sizes but I haven't done much small stuff.

Hi Charlie
The best is to put a little liquid Flux on its legs and then Drag Solder it's Legs. Then the best to use is something like PROWICK (Techspray)
3mm wide Solder Braid With ROSIN in it. The Rosin Sucks the Solder out of the Legs and leaves a very Clean Leg.The easiest is to put the
Solder Braid Against the Legs which are all covered with a solder Blob, then Lay your hot Soldering Iron Against the Braid and it will suck up all the Solder.
I have To Do this for very small SMD Packages with very fine pitches and with a little practice it gets easier and works very well.
Kind Regards

Thanks Craig. I've used solder wick a few times like that, it works like magic.
You've given me the confidence to try it. Thanks.
