Uploading attachments etc

Hi,
I tried to upload a file last night but only found downloads in user files section, am I thinking this in reverse?
Is there an idiots guide to uploading a file to attach to a post?
As I recall, on the old forum there used to be an option to upload directly into the post which would be easier for me as I am not used to doing this sort of thing.

When you open the preview, you will see at the bottom side of the editor windows a green arrow.
Attachments and other options, that will lead to upload the permitted type of files.
