Replacement dongle

Hi to everyone,

I am after a replacement dongle for the Proton compiler.

I have 2 dongles. However one stopped working some time ago. In order to have redundancy I would like to purchase a replacement dongle.

I have purchased the Positron compiler as well. However for the support of old projects I still use the Proton compiler, with which the projects were compiled at the time.

With only one working dongle, there is no good plan B, if this dongle fails as well.

Attached is a photo of the 2 dongles. The blue one, which is the oldest still works fine. The small black one must be faulty. I tried it on 3 different computers.

I would prefer a new dongle. However a working second hand one would be ok.

Can anyone please help.

I very much doubt you will get a new one unless Crownhill still have them.
I think I still have a couple if I can find them. The black (driver free) was never used.
I will have a look when I have a bit of time spare. If I do do find them you can have them free but would appreciate a donation to Les.
I will let you know if I find them sometime next week.

The Positron compilers do not need dongles, and they are backward compatible with the Proton compilers, because they 'are' the Proton compilers, just name changed and, somewhat, evolved over the 10 years.

I have been using Proton since the very beginning and have very little trouble compiling original files in Positron.

The .bas files are simply text files.  Sometimes when you try to compile old files you will get errors but that is simply because Positron is a later and much improved version of Proton.

Work through the errors one at a time using the help file and if you get stuck ask here on the forum.  The final compilation will almost certainly be smaller and run faster than older compilations.

IIRC Positron has never required a Dongle, it was only most itterations of the older Proton version of the compiler that needed them but I belive towards the end you could purchase a dongle free version of Proton as an upgrade.

Although some older Proton commands such as All_Digital (now default by the compiler) and Parameter passing sub routines (now Proceedures) have been depreciated to Legacy (not for new code) they have been retained for backwards compatability with older Proton code so older Proton the code should compile under Positron without too many (if any) problems and as @See_Mos said if you get stuck there are people here who can help you.

Even though it seem be a little inconvient I do so, I recommend that if you have to revisit older Proton code and make any changes that you do so in Positron and deal with any compatability issues they may occure there and then. I say that becase the problem with conitinuing to work on older code using Proton is that if you need help in adding a new function/feature to your code the replies you get will probably feature commands/methods that only work in Positron as that is what most people here are now using now and so the solutions provided would be of no use to you as they would not compile in Proton.

Hi Les,

Yes a lot of time has gone. I am 70 now and semi-retired. Over the years I have used the Proton compiler for well over a 100 projects. I am still supporting these projects for my customers.

I also have sent an email in which I would like to purchase the latest version of the Positron compiler.

However I am still also after a replacement dongle. Having only one working dongle could be cutting it somewhat fine. Can you still supply one?
