I'm trying to find an easy way of reading and writing to a USB stick (with FAT16/32 directories). I would have thought that there were little boards available that can do it, but I can't find any. It is for a project at the museum.

Any ideas?

Search for "CH376 CH376s USB Module U Disk Module" at AliExpress. This opens up many possibilities.
I sent one to Les a few years ago, hoping he might have time to create a library for an 18F, but unfortunately, he didn't. I think Les has a library for a 16-bit PIC. I haven't had the courage to start that project myself.

EDIT: Trastikata has added a complete Fat16/32 library to its graphics library, working for both 16-bit and 8-bit  PICs. See https://protoncompiler.com/index.php?msg=23532
